Electric Luton Tail-Lift on a Ford E-Transit L3 Single Cab for Urenco Ltd
Urenco is an international supplier of enrichment services and fuel cycle products for the civil nuclear industry, supporting utility companies worldwide that generate low-carbon electricity through nuclear power.
The Challenge
Urenco Ltd required an electric Luton capable of supporting operational transport while aligning with their sustainability objectives. The vehicle needed to combine the practicality of a large Luton body with reliable load-handling capability, built on the Ford E-Transit L3 single cab platform.
Alongside maximising load space, the solution needed to ensure safe and efficient loading through a tail-lift system while remaining compliant with operational and fleet safety requirements.
Our Approach
CPD delivered a purpose-built electric Luton conversion designed to balance payload capability, durability and operational practicality.
Chassis Integration – Built on the Ford E-Transit L3 single cab platform in a 4250kg configuration, providing a strong electric base capable of supporting the demands of Urenco.
Body & Load Space – Installed a 13'6" (4145mm) Luton body with a durable powder-coated finish, creating a professional fleet appearance while maximising cargo capacity.
“When building a Luton body for an electric chassis, the goal is to maintain the same durability and load capability operators expect from a traditional vehicle. Every component, from the body structure to the tail-lift installation, is fitted with long-term operational reliability in mind.”
- CPD Luton Build Team
Load Handling – Fitted with a CPD standard 500kg Del/Dhollandia solid platform tail-lift with trolley stops, ensuring safe and efficient loading.
Operational Safety – Added under-body side guards and completed tachograph calibration within the cab to support operational safety and compliance.
Chassis Extension – Integrated a Ford chassis extension around the body to ensure correct structural support and optimal weight distribution.
CPD Luton pod for optimal aerodynamics while on the road.
Electrical Integration – EV conversions require specialist handling of high-voltage systems.
“With EV conversions, safety and procedure come first. We isolate the vehicle’s electrical system in line with manufacturer guidelines before installing our plug-and-play insulated wiring loom and components to ensure reliable, long-term performance.”
- Rob Kenny, Wiring Shop Manager, CPD
The Outcome
The vehicle progressed from build start to completion in just six days, demonstrating CPD’s ability to deliver specialist electric vehicle conversions quickly while maintaining high build quality.
The completed E-Transit Luton provides Urenco Ltd with a practical, zero-emissions vehicle capable of supporting daily operations while maintaining reliable load-handling capability.
“As we continue to support low-carbon energy generation, it’s important that our operational vehicles reflect the same commitment to sustainability. This electric Luton provides the practicality and reliability we require for day-to-day operations while supporting our wider environmental objectives.” - Urenco Ltd
Key Takeaway
As organisations transition towards electrified fleets, vehicle conversions must still deliver the practicality and durability expected from traditional commercial vehicles. This build demonstrates how CPD combines electric platforms with proven body solutions to create reliable, operationally ready vehicles. Contact us for more info on our electric vehicle conversions.
